Mediterranean elegance. Timeless, intentional, never overdone.

Jackie Kennedy and the elegance of the woman who does not try

THE JACKIE KENNEDY STYLE LESSONS THAT EVERY SUMMER STEALS

THE ICONS

No woman of the twentieth century belonged to the sea as much as Jacqueline. And few understood so early that true seaside elegance is the kind that does not try.

There is a photograph of Jacqueline in the summer of 1962, coming out of the water on the Amalfi Coast, her hair wet, in the simplest swimsuit imaginable. Not a single jewel, not a gesture for the camera. And yet it endured. Jackie understood, earlier than almost anyone, a truth that remains rare: at the seaside, the woman who seems not to be trying always wins.

The summer in Ravello. In August 1962, Jacqueline spent the summer in Ravello, perched above the Golfo di Salerno, far from Washington and the weight of being who she was. She swam in the coves of the Amalfi Coast, danced at night in one of the village villas, let her daughter run through the gardens. That was the summer that gave the Ravello swimsuit its name, in the colour of morning over that sea. There are places a woman chooses. And there are places that become hers forever.

The style the sea invented. Jackie's summer uniform fitted into a small suitcase: a swimsuit of clean lines, a pair of trousers that took their name from the island of Capri and that she helped turn into a classic, a silk scarf tied over her hair, and the enormous dark glasses that came to be named after her. Nothing complicated. The sea teaches that to whoever listens to it: that excess does not survive water and salt, and that true elegance is always a form of subtraction. It is no accident that the Jackie Bikini speaks exactly that language: black, subtly textured, with a structured cup and the high waist of a classic that never goes out of fashion. It is the bikini Jackie would wear today, as clean and timeless as the maillot she wore then, and it looks even better with cat-eye sunglasses and a scarf in the hair.

The piece that sums her up, even off the beach. Not everything that captures Jackie's spirit was born by the sea. The Lisbon Top, which does not belong to this collection, seems all the same designed in her image: a white linen top, with a V neckline and mother-of-pearl buttons, thrown over the swimsuit on the way out of the water, with a scarf tied over the hair and the glasses still on. It is the Jackie of the city, the one who returns from the beach without losing any of her presence. Because her essence was never in the place. It was in the way of being, and that you carry everywhere.

Pearls are always appropriate. "Pearls are always appropriate," she is said to have declared, and she made them a signature. There was something perfect in the meeting of a bead's discreet shine and skin warm from the sun. That is the same logic behind the beaded pieces of this collection, from the Perline necklace, made bead by bead in the artisanal tradition of the Mediterranean, to the Fontelina, that strand of white shells born of a Capri beach club. They never shout. They simply finish the sentence.

Privacy as the last luxury. Later, with Onassis, it was in the Mediterranean and the Aegean that Jackie found what she had always been looking for: the sea as the one place no one could reach her. Aboard the Christina O, on the islands offshore, in the coves the photographers could not enter, she dressed for herself and no one else. She refused to be a spectacle. She wanted to live her life, not to record it. That is the presence the brand admires: that of a woman who does not need to be noticed to know exactly who she is.

The sea was, for Jackie, far more than a backdrop. It was the place where she could finally be just a woman swimming. Perhaps that is the last lesson of her style, the one no trend will ever grasp: that the most elegant summer is not the one in which we are seen. It is the one in which, for once, we no longer need to be.Sofia Godinho
