Every serious fashion title now writes about pearls the same way, and it is worth noticing the grammar. Nobody writes classic pearls. Everybody writes pearls against something.

Who What Wear placed Modern Pearls among its jewellery trends for spring 2026, with the observation that pearls have shed their classic reputation in favour of irregular shapes, mixed metals and unexpected silhouettes. Two months later the same title listed pearl necklaces again, this time including both imperfect freshwater shapes and perfectly round ones, which is the sign of a trend that has stopped policing itself.

Vogue Scandinavia went further in February 2026 and named the problem out loud, describing the old reputation of the pearl as overly ladylike, and dared to say dowdy, tied to weddings and christenings, a perception now being actively dismantled. Marie Claire folded pearls into a broader sea-inspired mood alongside shell, coral and turquoise, and headlined the year's jewellery as anything but minimal. And Vogue Singapore, writing about baroque pearls, put the aesthetic case best: unlike traditional gemstones prized for symmetry and polish, there is something magnetic about the amorphous, rough-hewn quality of the baroque.

The one title that has been consistent longest is PORTER, Net-a-Porter's magazine, which declared several years ago that pearls were no longer the preserve of grandmothers and monarchs. Everything since has been the industry catching up with that sentence.

The Runway Evidence

Chanel is the obvious place to start, and the autumn winter 2025 show in March of that year was the strongest pearl statement of the period. Numero described pearls in endlessly varied form but above all oversized, mixed with candy-coloured glass beads on the necklaces, and then carried into the clothes and accessories: pearls set into the heels of two-tone ankle boots, on micro bags, and in XXL necklace-bags worn over a suit or a knit set.

Vaquera took it to its logical extreme in Paris the same season with what WWD called gobstopper pearl necklaces that grazed the ground. That is not a wearable idea and it is not meant to be. It is the runway doing its actual job, which is to establish permission at the far end so that the middle looks reasonable.

Since then the pearl has migrated into places jewellery does not usually go. Carven and Rabanne studded their spring 2026 sandals with pearls. Shushu/Tong made them part of the spring summer 2026 argument. Marc Jacobs sent out deliberately disordered beaded necklaces with strands of glossy black pearls and chokers. And at Chanel couture in spring 2026, Matthieu Blazy designed stacked floral bead necklaces described as though the Chanel woman had misplaced her pearls and improvised, which is a very elegant way of admitting the pearl is now the reference point everything else is measured against.

The Red Carpet, Told Honestly

Here is where most articles on this subject start inventing things, so let us be precise.

The Met Gala on 6 May 2026 produced two genuine pearl moments, and they were enormous. Almost none of the runway translates literally, and it is not supposed to. What translates is the permission underneath it, and that comes down to four decisions.

Buy irregular before you buy round. Buy one strong piece rather than a coordinated set. Wear it against warm golden metal instead of on its own. And wear it in daylight with clothes that are not trying, which is the thing every single source agrees on and the thing that costs nothing.
